"Rock legend Van Morrison closed out the 2016 Forest Hills Stadium concert series in style on Sunday.
The Belfast-born icon, whose career spans 50 years, treated the crowd to renditions of hits like “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Wild Night,” “Why Must I Always Explain” and “Sometimes We Cry.”
His blues and soul inflected “Rain Check,” “Going Down to Bangor” and the sensual “In the Afternoon” were also emotionally stirring. But Morrison did play some of his more recent tunes, thrilling the crowd with “Keep Me Singing,” the title track from his new album.
With his voice strong and clear, the 71-year-old singer rifled through the one-hour, 40-minute show with little interruption. He got some help from his daughter, Shana Morrison, in the form of backing vocals on “That Old Black Magic” midway through the set, and eventually closed with “In the Garden/Holy Guardian Angel” and then a 10-minute rendition of “Gloria,” with the band jamming without Van Morrison in the final minutes of the hit.
The show sold out the 12,800 seat stadium. And with more than 100,000 tickets sold over four months — with hugely popular artists like Mumford & Sons, Paul Simon and Dolly Parton gracing the stage — it was the stadium’s most successful and longest season."
